Director, Mendocino DCSS
Background: Born and raised in Wayne, Nebraska, once a Husker fan – always a Husker fan. Was the youngest City Clerk in Nebraska back in 1974 at 22 years of age (City Clerk of my home town!!!). Married my college sweetheart in 1974 and raised two sons. Moved to Arizona in 1979 and became the City Clerk/Finance Director for Sierra Vista, AZ. We then moved to Ukiah, CA in 1991 for my wife’s job as Mendocino County’s Public Health Director. I had to start over working in the public sector as an Analyst II for the County, moved up to Deputy County Administrator and in 2003 became the Director of Child Support for Mendocino County. We have 4 wonderful grand kiddies in the San Diego and Sacramento area. I will be turning 65 this October so it should be time to think about retirement. Who knows? I enjoy golfing, travel, and of course, babysitting the grand kiddies.
Did you always work in Child Support: No, from 1992 to 2002 I was working in the County Administrative Office. Back in 2002, the then Director of Child Support tried to take on the District Attorney on a couple of issues and lost; I was asked by the County to take over the job when the Supervisors let the then current Director go. I stayed for several months and began to enjoy the work and the people in the office. When asked to become permanent I said yes and have been here since. No regrets at all.
CSDA: I have very little involvement in CSDA but value the work done and the advocacy for Child Support both at the local and state level. I do not have a deputy or an assistant to help so I do keep busy. We always send at least 4 employees to the annual training conference and attendees have given it great reviews. CSDA is an endless resource for me for info, answers to questions, and the ability to pick up the phone and find out what is going on.
Mendocino County: Great place to live and work. For Child Support the underground economy is a challenge for us. We have tons of people with no visible means of support but are driving around in expensive cars and enjoying a rich life style; yes, marijuana is a large part of our economy and cash is king. I grew up in a small town and Ukiah still has that small town feel.
What are you most proud of: I have been blessed with a wonderful wife, two successful sons, two wonderful daughters-in-law, and 4 grand kiddies that are so much fun to be around and watch them grow up and explore their world.
Mendocino County Child Support has 30 great employees that make a difference in the families we touch, and we really do help our communities. I do enjoy going to work every day and look for a bright future for Mendocino County.
